Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise at the age of an infant. She was a night nurse to allow her mother the time she needed during the day to indulge in the passion of art, literature, and theatre. DuVernay was captivated by the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how art can be used as a tool for activism. DuVernay had her mother who was socially aware and showed her how to utilize art as a method of expressing herself. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and brought up. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in neighboring Selma Alabama. The summers DuVernay spent there would later inspire her to make a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at an institution called the University of California Los Angeles where she earned qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism at the age of a student. She began as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to watch the home of one of the members of the jury, and then examine their junk. As a result of her duties she was dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the publicity business. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in a small production studio right out of school. She was promoted to the position and set up her own company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR, the company has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotional campaigns, such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
